Marist Wrestling has been in existence since 1978, and has experienced much success since its inception. The program's first Head Coach was Mr. Paul Froelich, who was followed by Mr. William Stevenson. Coach Stevenson was responsible for their first ESCC Conference Championship, their first individual state champion, and their first State Wrestling Team Championship. Mr. Mark Gervais, the current Head Coach, took over in 1983. Since then, Coach Gervais has been elected into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches' Hall of Fame and recently celebrated his 400th dual meet victory.
Marist Teams have won: ● Team State Championships in 1983 and 1987 ● placed 2nd in 1997 ● placed 3rd in the state in 1985, 1989 and 1991 ● 27 Conference Championships in a row (a national record) ● 12 Regional Championships ● 7 Sectional Championships
Marist Wrestling is rated nearly every year as one of the top 10 programs in Illinois and has received national recognition several times, having been ranked among the top 25 teams in the country by W.I. N. Magazine and by Brute Scholastic.
Marist individuals have won: ● 10 state championships ● 10 runner-ups ● 43 additional state place winners ● over 100 state qualifiers ● Click here for a detailed list of place winners and records
Marist Wrestling has not only produced some outstanding wrestlers, but equally outstanding students. Graduates have attended Division 1, 2 and 3 colleges while continuing to compete while earning their degrees, including some All-Americans.
Students understand that Wrestling is an extracurricular activity and academics come first. If the student’s priorities are in order they can use wrestling to receive a college scholarship. Our last two State Champions did exactly that and are now attending Purdue University and Stanford University on Academic and Athletic Scholarships. |
